History of Bigelow Hollow

Bigelow Hollow State Park lies directly next to the Nipmuck State Forest. The plots of land create the largest forest area in Eastern Connecticut. The state started acquiring this land in 1905 and has added to it steadily since that time. The pond, which makes up a large part of the park, doubled in size before the parks creation, thanks to the feuding of two parties of people who wanted access to the pond's water.

Features of Bigelow Hollow

Bigelow Hollow expands over 9,000 acres and features a pond which takes up 18 acres. Two smaller ponds are also situated within the boundaries of the park. The park allows hikers to explore miles of hiking trails. The main hiking trail covers around 6 miles. Visitors can use the pond for both fishing and boating. Boaters must use man-propelled forms of transportation. Motors are not allowed. The pond gets stocked regularly, which allows plenty of fun and excitement for those wishing to partake in fishing. Camping cannot occur on state park property, but many local campgrounds offer areas fairly close to the park.
