Chatfield Hollow State Park

Killingworth, Connecticut features one of the state's highlights: Chatfield Hollow State Park. These 356 acres provide residents and visitors alike hiking trails, trout fishing, biking and rock climbing.

Hiking

Nearly 20 miles of hiking trails originate within the park, and many continue into the neighboring Cockaponset State Forest. Hikers seeking rugged trails are sure to enjoy the rock outcroppings and many roots that make this terrain scenic. Parents or teachers wanting to take young ones on a safer, more educational hike can enjoy the boardwalk constructed over a swamp.

Mountain biking

Chatfield Hollow is a popular place for technical cross-country mountain biking, featuring some of the most difficult trails in Connecticut. Lookout Trail is known for its challenge, as is the Pond Trail that loops off the side of the Deep Woods Trail.

Rock climbing

Numerous ledges and cliffs exist throughout the park, as do several Indian caves. One of the most used climbing routes is adjacent to Route 80 at the southern end of the Deep Woods Trail.

Trout fishing

The waters of Chatfield Hollow are easily accessible, making the park an ideal fishing experience for young and novice anglers. Connecticut's DEP stocks the park on opening day and throughout the season. The period between opening day and Memorial Day is considered the best time to fish.

Chatfield Hollow State Park offers a variety of activities to enjoy the outdoors from the third Saturday in April to Columbus Day in October. Parking fees do apply and vary between weekdays and weekends. Bathrooms and picnic areas are provided. Visitors are encouraged to check out the restored historic waterwheel.
