Collis P. Huntington State Park

Commonly considered one of the most beautiful parks in the state of Connecticut, Collis B. Huntington State Park is far too unique to pass up. The park is known for its sculptures of bears, wolves and other wildlife. It was originally donated to the state by the Huntington family and remains a main attraction in the towns of Redding, Newtown and Bethel.

Atmosphere

The park has a total area of 883 acres, most of which is composed of dense woodlands. Visitors report feeling as though they are far from civilization. Some of the woodlands are mature forests, while others are newer and have grown over the areas that were originally used by the Huntington family for agricultural purposes. There are five ponds throughout the park. These were built artificially in the 1800s and are now prime locations for fishing.

Activities

Along with fishing, the ponds also offer other opportunities for visitors. Canoeing is common on the larger ponds. Some small boats are also allowed.

Trails

There is a vast network of trails that run through and around the park. These are multipurpose trails and open to horseback riders, walkers, bikers and cross country skiers. Some trails are marked, while others are more rustic and unmarked.
