Hammonasset Beach State Park

Hammonasset Beach State Park is Connecticut’s largest shoreline state park with over two miles of public land facing the Atlantic Ocean. As such, the park attracts huge numbers of visitors each year; in 1920, the year the park opened, it recorded 75,000 visitors. Beach and outdoor lovers are sure to find many ways to fill their time during a visit to the park.

Camping

Campers at Hammonasset can choose from among 550 campsites. Bathhouses with hot showers, dishwashing stations and a camp store are available inside the park. Visitors who prefer a slightly less rugged stay at the park can reserve one of two rustic cabins. The park offers a variety of activities for campers throughout the season, including movie nights, crafts for children, bingo and a pancake breakfast. Camping season runs from mid-May to mid-October each year.

Water activities

Visitors to the park want to go swimming, but this is not the only water activity they are able to enjoy. Hammonasset Beach State Park also offers visitors fresh and salt water fishing opportunities. Finally, a boat launch allows skiff owners to spend a day on the waves.

Hiking and biking

Hammonasset Beach State Park features a ¾ mile beachfront boardwalk, offering walkers scenic views of the beach. For more panoramic views, hikers can visit observation decks located along the parks three hiking trails. Additionally, visitors can access a paved trail that allows them to walk or bike from one end of the park to the other.

Hammonasset Beach State Park can clearly keep any visitor occupied during their stay. Whether on a day trip or a multi-night visit, between visiting the beach, hiking and biking and taking part in various camping activities, visitors are sure to stay busy and happy while they are at the park.
