Old Furnace State Park

Old Furnace State Park is located in Killingly, Connecticut. Although it is a relatively small park that encompasses only 367 acres, many believe it contains one of the best hiking trails in the entire state. Old Furnace got its unique name from the iron furnace that operated on the property throughout most of the 19th century. In 1909, the town of Killingly purchased the land, made it into a park and later sold the park to the state. The rest, as they say, is history.

Hiking Old Furnace

Old Furnace State Park has just one established hiking trail, but this trail has earned rave reviews from hikers of all skill levels. The entire trail is three miles long, and it winds up and around Half Hill Pond and Ross Pond. According to those who hike this trail, the highlight of the trek is the cliff-top view from scenic Half Hill.

Boating Old Furnace

Boating is another popular activity at Old Furnace State Park. Canoers like to come out early to enjoy the peaceful waters of Half Hill Pond. There is no ramp for large boats here. However, fishermen who hope to catch a big one in Ross Pond are able to launch their boats via the boat ramp at the northern end.

Picnicking at Old Furnace

Old Furnace State Park offers easy access to a cleared picnicking area that overlooks Furnace Brook. This area is open year-round, so visitors can enjoy views of everything from budding trees in spring, placid pond scenes in summer and breathtaking foliage colors in fall.
