Putnam Memorial Park

Located in Redding, Connecticut, Putnam Memorial Park combines the historical significance of the site with the beautiful and peaceful nature that surrounds the area. The park surrounds Lake McDougall, providing recreational areas around the lake as well as historical sites.

History

Putnam Memorial Park was an Army encampment led by General Israel Putnam during the Independence War. The Army encampment played a significant role during the war as a supply depot, as well as a holding point to suppress the British forces and local forces, including the cowboys and skinners that inhabited the area. The encampment played a significant role as a supply depot, since it supplied Washington's troops. After the war, the encampment was torn down. In the early 19th century, the site was reopened as Putnam Memorial Park.
