History and geography

Located about eight miles north of Danbury, Squantz Pond State Park occupies over 170 acres of woodlands, wetlands and lakefront shores. The park was named for Chief Squantz of the Schaghticoke tribe, from whom the land that comprised the region was purchased in 1729. To this day, Native American artifacts including mallets and other stone tools are occasionally discovered. A staggering array of plant life fills the landscape, while over a dozen species of fish call the pond home.

Squantz Pond supports a variety of aquatic recreations, including swimming, boating, scuba diving and fishing. The Connecticut state park department operates a boat launch for small watercraft. During the winter, skaters can practice their jumps and spins on the thick sheet of ice that covers the surface of the pond. The park is also a favorite destination for amateur and professional photographers, as the reflective surface of the pond and lush foliage of the woods create incredible scenes for them to capture. It is not uncommon to see brides, graduates and other celebrants posing for pictures on sunny summer days. Hikers can trek through several gentle trails, then use the provided picnic tables to enjoy a post-expedition meal.
